Much to the group’s relief, they were permitted to leave the Elms some two hours later.
‘Goodness,’ puffed Ruth, ‘I know it was only two hours, but I feel like we’ve been there forever today.’
‘I blame those videos of Hugh in that toy car,’ said Ted. ‘Watching them once was bad enough, but four times.’
‘I know. And for all Gwen insisted he was doing a three-point turn, I just couldn’t see it.’
‘I thought it was a bit rich bragging about his emergency stop, when all he did was drive the car straight into a wall. Thank God Evie phoned when she did. Her call spared us having to coo over the pictures of the kid’s “artwork”. I can’t imagine anyone other than Gwen would think a ten-month-old baby was capable of chucking out a masterpiece.’
‘Or three,’ giggled Ruth. ‘Anyway, let’s just be grateful we’ve managed to escape unscathed. Apart from this wig. It’s driving me mad. I can’t wait to yank it off and flop down on the sofa with a nice cup of tea.’
‘And a big fat chunk of Easter chocolate truffle cake.’
Ruth’s features twisted into a rueful expression. ‘Oh. I, um, think I might have devoured the last of that yesterday.’
Ted’s bunny ears drooped as he came to an abrupt stop, gaping at her. ‘Huh! Now you tell me. I’ve been looking forward to that all morning. Any orange spice left?’
‘Afraid not. Lucas polished it off yesterday. According to him, he was in dire need of orange spice cake to help him over this latest break-up.’
‘A likely story,’ snorted Ted, resuming his steady trot. ‘If Lucas devoured cake every time he broke up with a girl, he’d be the size of Gibraltar by now. If you ask me, he’s been employing some very sneaky cake-snaffling tactics.’
‘You’re probably right,’ chuckled Ruth. ‘But whatever his tactics, the fact that we now have neither orange spice nor Easter truffle, means we are officially a cake-less house. Not a situation I’m comfortable with.’
‘Me neither. And desperate times lead to desperate measures.’
‘How desperate?’
‘Desperate enough for me to knock up a batch of jam tarts. The last lot I made weren’t too bad.’
‘They weren’t if you like crunchy pastry and jam hard enough to crack your dentures on. No, I’ll make us a honey and almond cake. Shouldn’t take long at all.’
‘Not if we had honey. I used the last of it the other day. I’m sure they’ll have some in the Big House though.’
‘Bound to have, but I can’t face popping round. If Fiona’s there, she’ll want my opinion on yet more wallpaper samples. And I’m really not in the mood.’
‘Me neither. But I don’t think she’d bore Dillon with her interior design ideas. You wouldn’t mind popping over, would you, son?’
At this suggestion, Dillon’s stomach somersaulted. Popping over to the Big House would mean there was a chance of seeing Ginny again. Something he’d been thinking about ever since the last time he’d seen her during their trip to school.
‘Er, no,’ he replied. ‘I wouldn’t mind at all.
